Gravel driveways are also a great option for the security conscious. See all the choices on our Gravels and Aggregates page.

If you have sloping ground the best choice is slate chippings, you can see our fantastic selection in our Welsh Slate Chippings section as being flattish in shape they tend to stay in place or self binding gravel where a more solid robust finish is required.

One of the main considerations when choosing an aggregate for driveways is displacement, nobody wants to end up with ruts in their drive or having to rake the gravel out time and again. Whilst a cheaper local pea gravel is okay to do the job, this is exactly what can happen as the gradings can be variable and won't neccesarily interlock which causes one of the main issues with having a gravel driveway which is excessive movement.

In order to alleviate this we would recommend an angular gravel, slate or chipping which due to its shape, will interlock together better and will lie flatter and not disperse as easily as rounded gravel.

An angular gravel such as the 20mm Golden Gravel or sub-rounded gravel like the Cheshire Pink with a grading of 10 to 20mm will be best. A larger sized gravel or slate up to a 40mm is also better as it doesn’t get stuck in the tread of the tyres.

All of our products intended for drives are listed below with the most popular gravels being Golden Gravel, Cotswold Gold, Dove Grey, Cotswold Buff which are all available in our Gravels and Aggregates section, and the slatechippings in blue and plum in both sizes, these are all listed in our Welsh Slate Section.

The choice of colours and textures is all down to you whether you want to match a local stone, keep within a chosen colour scheme, whether you are going for a plain neutral natural finish or a bright colourful contrast the choice is yours.

Quick transformation

What you will get is a quick and easy transformation to your home. See in the pictures below how some of our customers have transformed their driveways with our products.

Use our gravel calculator to find out how much you need. We normally recommend driveways are laid at a thickness of 50mm-60mm.

Make it Low Maintenance

The preparation and installation of good solid edges is critical to prevent spreading of the gravel and give a professional neat frame to the drive and contrast nicely with the gravel whilst keeping the product in place.

Stop those weeds

Weed membrane laid onto a well compacted MOT Type 1 layer or any solid surface, before the gravel is spread will prevent weeds coming through and keep it low maintenance.

Harder Wearing

Self Binding Gravel surfaces are made from crushed stone graded at 10mm to dust and comes in a beautiful rich golden colour. The appeal with rockeries is the ability to form a feature within the garden where planting can be quite informal and allowed to develop naturally around the rocks with gravel, slate or pebbles surrounding the rockery stones.

The rockery stones are normally around 200-300mm in size, but if the project allows something larger you can use Slate Feature Stones. For something more coastal or rounded take a look at the Welsh Quartz Boulders, the large ones are particularly good for featuring in gravel or slate projects as they add a nice contrast and are quite mooth in texture.

Slate walling is very popular for edging ponds, water features and paths. It is also perfect for creating natural looking returning walls or barbeques, where the natural beauty of slate stands out against any type of brick or stonework. The slate works well either laid dry or pointed, it can be cut or split quite easily and is much better than the usual brick and block options as it weathers really well and improves all the time, unlike manmade products.

As slate has been used for generations for roofing it is a well used permanent natural choice for many gardens.

Monoliths and standing stones are slender pieces of slate, hand picked form the slate quarries in Wales which are often used as individual focal points. Then sit back and admire your efforts knowing that you won’t have to be constantly on the lookout for weeds.

If you fancy a change (and a rest) from maintaining a grassy area, no need to remove the grass, merely douse with weed killer, lay the membrane on top and spread the gravel out over it. An instant transformation! All that remains is to get out the garden furniture and light the barbeque.

What to use

Aggregates for groundcover or mulching can be virtually anything from sand, to any gravel, slate, glass, pebble or cobble. Rockery stone can be used to provide an edging to the gravel to provide a different texture and decorative finish.

Top tip

Use gravel with rockery stone as the gravel really compliments and highlights the stone especially when using slate rockery. Using rockery with cobbles and pebbles creates a river bed theme to the garden.

Funk it up

Modern garden designs can be enhanced and created by using coloured gravels in a variety of different ways, for example use black slate or charcoal granite for a monochrome design or silver grey granite to add that zen feel to any garden.

Using glass aggregates is an exciting way of adding colour to your designs. Use it on its own or with a combination of other colours to create intricate and interesting combinations. Glass can also be used with water features or ponds to provide a more modern feel and looks amazing when lit up at night to add that real wow factor.

Focal Point

Adding boulders, large slate feature stones or monoliths are a great way of adding a focal point to the garden design, to help create some height and depth. Slate standing stones, monoliths or water features can add that extra level to any sized garden. Create interest within the garden by using mixtures of different products together to create a contrast in textures and colours or both.

Bringing the great outdoors to your door

Using gravel and aggregates for gardens can create a natural feel by combining planting schemes interspaced with gravel, different sized rocks with smaller ones like you would see at by rivers or on mountain screes. Whatever theme you have in mind within the garden, whether it be the seashore, a rocky outcrop on the moor, natural pools and rivers. All can be used to help make your garden something special.
', 'product_text' => 'Products used for ground cover', 'hide_background_image' => false, 'hide_background_image_on_mobile' => false, 'sequence' => '2', 'created' => '2015-01-28 12:27:28', 'modified' => '2024-06-18 13:03:26', 'is_active' => true, 'link_url' => '', 'link_text' => '', 'template' => '', 'intro_heading' => '', 'intro_text' => '', 'icon' => '' ), 'AccentColour' => array( 'id' => '5', 'name' => 'Purple', 'hex' => '774789', 'created' => '2015-01-21 15:52:33', 'modified' => '2015-01-21 15:52:33', 'is_active' => true ), 'ListingImage' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'MetaData' => array( 'id' => '34', 'model' => 'Inspiration', 'model_id' => '5', 'title' => 'Create Ground Cover | Inspiration | Decorative Aggregates', 'description' => 'Get inspired by our create ground cover blog post. Draw out your path using string or a marker, dig out, compact the base, (using an Mot type material if required), lay your membrane and level out the gravel of your choice on top. Use these products to create undulating paths and steps.

We would recommend that a gravel no bigger than 16mm be used on path ways - usually the 10mm size is considered the most suitable, we have lots for you to choose from on in our Gravel and Aggregates category. It’s easier and more stable for walking on. Alternatively 20mm slate can be used and is particularly good as its flat pieces lay together and form a solid surface for walking on.

If you need a little more from your path than just to be walked on, such as prams, bikes, wheelchairs etc. Keep that natural feel with the Cotswold Golden Path. It is ideal as it provides a long lasting solid base with a natural grit surface and a beautiful golden finish.

For the ultimate gravel finish, use the resin bonded system.
